DB is a young single mum who works part-time whilst claiming benefits. Due to the thresholds of Universal Credit, her wages often mean she is classed as earning above their threshold and she then receives no benefits. This has put incredible pressure on DB, as she has to pay additional nursery fees to attend work, and also travel to and from work and nursery. She currently owes the nursery £200 in fees and has no means of clearing this debt without accruing debt somewhere else.
JE had a spinal injury and has been left with severe back pain, due to the nerve damage. He has just moved into a bungalow, as the second floor flat that he was living in left him trapped and isolated. JE receives disability benefits but, with the contribution he has to pay for his care, he has not been able to save anything to help him with the cost of moving. He has managed to get most of the essential items, but his cooker was condemned and he has no money left to replace it.
