Nicki from Rawmarsh Foodbank

Around two miles north of Rotherham sits the village of Rawmarsh.

Nicki Goodwin and her husband Neal moved into the area over 18 years ago, with a passion to serve local people. For them it’s all about being part of the community and caring for the people’s needs, through action, relationship and connection.

According to data from the Department of Health and Social Care approximately 21% of small neighbourhoods in Rotherham borough fall within the most deprived 10% in England.

For many families the cost of living continues to be a heavy burden, which is why Nicki & Neal helped launch the Rawmarsh Foodbank in 2022. Nicki shared how it’s more than just providing food parcels, it’s about meeting people’s needs on a holistic level.

“People are in really difficult situations and need help with things other than just food and that’s where Acts 435 comes in.” - Nicki Goodwin

Last year Nicki and the team came across Acts 435 and signed-up to be a partner organisation; since then they’ve been able to help people in the community with small practical needs: including beds, fridge freezers, cutlery and cooker equipment.

Nicki shared about a gentleman they met, who was eating all of his meals with a teaspoon and a bowl. Through Acts 435 they were able to get some cutlery, crockery and some saucepans - which was completely transformational, allowing him to eat his meals with dignity.

Often it’s a small gift that can renew hope and show that someone that people really do care about them.

“We had a family who were coming to the Foodbank but they didn’t have a way to cook the food we gave them. Through Acts 435 we were able to put a request up for a microwave and air fryer and now they can cook food.” - Rachel, Trustee

Acts 435 is a great way to provide additional support. It’s free to use, the process is simple and it gives churches and charities access to people who are looking to donate to meet specific needs people have.
