S and her husband, R, have eight children. R works as a handy man, although he is struggling to find enough work that will fit with his health needs, as he struggles with his mental health and at times is unable to go out of the house. The family is, therefore, dependent on the basic benefits and R's limited income, and has no savings. The washing machine, which is used daily, recently broke irreparably and needs replacing urgently as they cannot afford launderette costs with the vast amount of daily washing.
